Recent studies have revealed shocking results which indicate that people suffering from vision loss have an upgraded or stronger sense of hearing.
Statistics from the specialized agency that is concerned with internal public health-World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that there are approximately 1.3 billion people around the world who suffer from a kind of vision loss. This visual impairment may be caused due to multiple reasons such as cataract, glaucoma, childhood blindness, blurred vision (refractive error), age related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
Data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that in the United States alone, around 3.4 million people in the age group of 40 and higher are legally blind or suffer from a kind of vision loss.
Many real life incidents have indicated that people who are completely blind or suffer from some extent of vision loss have enhanced sense of hearing and touch when compared to the people who have the perfect 20/20 vision.
And now, studies conducted by the scientists prove the above incidents true.
These studies show that people who have lost their vision at a young age have a stronger auditory perception and they can locate the origin of the sound in a better way when compared to the completely sighted population.
This study can be traced back to past results which indicate that the brains of people living with visual impairment have the ability to strengthen the remaining working senses by rewiring and adapting itself to the environment.
The journal of Neuroscience contains the findings from a recent study which explains in detail the changes taking place in the auditory cortex of people with visual impairments.
Occipital cortex, also known as the visual processing center of the human brain functions differently to process the information flowing in from various other organs of the human body to compensate for the loss of vision.
